90x200cm traditional kilim
I noted that I finished stitching these pieces together on February 25th, last winter. From then until now, a lot has changed. It might have been just a month ago when it turned into a carpet. Some things have diminished, while others have increased. So, what were you doing on February 25th last year? Do you sometimes look at your gallery and reminisce about old days? Do you read your journals and reflect on the day?
Last winter, pieces that were seemingly useless were collected, brewed, and woven. They turned into carpets. While today’s term is ‘recycling,’ Anatolia has an ancient tradition passed down from our grandmothers and mothers that could be called ‘repurposing.’ I like the second term more. What a meaningful word: repurposing, adding value. But what does this value hold? Labor, love, nature… what else could be added, do you think?
