About the Book: Sonder sheds light on the gaps of memory through the medium of photography. It is an assemblage of still images extracted from 8mm and Super 8mm films found between the 1960s and 1980s across Turkey, Germany, Austria, USA, Italy, Israel, and the UK. By isolating these images from their original home video context and sequence, Kızıltunç treats them as deliberate compositions, returning the moving image to its origin: the still frame.
Instead of a chronological timeline, Sonder offers a sequence of emotional archetypes. This approach is inspired by John Koenig’s definition of "Sonder": the profound realization that every random passerby lives a life as vivid and complex as our own. Kızıltunç’s humanistic lens captures the "extras" of history—those accidentally caught by the camera—interconnecting them through a shared, global humanity.
